Rare sturgeon found in North Carolina river

A rare sturgeon has been found in a North Carolina river, prompting state officials to issue a warning to fishermen.

The fish, which is typically found in the Atlantic Ocean, was spotted in the Roanoke River near Weldon.

"This is truly a remarkable discovery and we are very excited about it," said fisheries biologist Will Brinson.

"This could be something we see more of as the climate changes."

Fishermen are being warned not to harvest the fish and to release it back into the water if they catch it.

Sturgeons can grow up to six feet long and weigh up to 200 pounds.

Sturgeon population on the rise in Michigan

Believe it or not, the sturgeon population is on the rise in Michigan. In fact, they are now one of the most populous fish in our Great Lakes. These ancient fish have been around since the time of the dinosaurs and have made a big comeback in recent years.

Why are sturgeons making a comeback? There could be a few reasons. Sturgeon populations were once decimated by overfishing, but today there are much stricter regulations in place. Additionally, many of the sturgeons' natural predators (such as salmon) have also seen declining populations, giving the sturgeons more space to thrive.

Sturgeons can weigh up to 200 pounds and grow up to 10 feet long. They are highly sought after by sport fishermen because they are challenging to catch and provide good fight. However, due to their declining numbers, it is important that anglers only take what they need and release any unused fish back into the water.

There are currently eleven different species of sturgeon found around the world, with six of those found in North America. The most common type in Michigan is the lake sturgeon, which can be found in all five Great Lakes. Although they were once nearly eliminated from our state waters, their population is now on the rise and offers great opportunities for anglers. Get out there and try to catch one of these ancient fish for yourself!

Anglers catch enormous sturgeon in Idaho

Anglers fishing Idaho's Clearwater River have been catching some enormous sturgeon lately. The largest one caught so far was reportedly over six feet long and weighed more than 300 pounds.

Sturgeon are an ancient species of fish that can grow to be quite large. They inhabit many bodies of water in North America, and are prized for their delicious meat.

While these catches are certainly impressive, anglers should take care not to over-fish this population. Sturgeons take a long time to mature, and if too many are caught it could lead to a decline in their numbers. So while you go salmon fishing Idaho, consider throwing in a line for some sturgeon!

Sturgeon spearing season underway in Wisconsin

Wisconsin's annual sturgeon spearing season got underway on Saturday, February 18th. The season will continue through Sunday, March 5th.

This year's sturgeon spearing season is expected to be a good one, as the fish population has been growing in recent years. In 2016, over 2,500 sturgeon were harvested during the season.

The best spots to spear sturgeon tend to be in the Madison and Milwaukee areas. Sturgeon can weigh anywhere from 50 to 200 pounds, so it is important to have the proper gear and know what you are doing when heading out onto the ice to spear one of these fish.

Safety is always a key concern during any winter activity, and it is especially important when spearfishing. With that in mind, make sure you dress appropriately for the conditions and always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on returning.

If you are looking to get out on the water and try your hand at sturgeon spearing this year, be sure to check with local authorities regarding regulations and licensing requirements.

California fisherman reels in a record-breaking sturgeon

Fishing can be a very rewarding hobby, providing a connection to nature and the opportunity to catch delicious, fresh seafood. For one California fisherman, it also proved to be quite lucrative – he reeled in a record-breaking sturgeon.

The colossal fish, which weighed in at an impressive 467 pounds and measured eight feet in length, is believed to be the largest ever caught on rod and reel in the state. The fisherman, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said that he was shocked when he finally got the fish into his boat.

"I couldn't believe it – I thought for sure it was a shark," he said. "But when I got closer, I could see it was a sturgeon. I couldn't believe I'd actually caught it."

The previous record for a sturgeon caught in California was 320 pounds, so this new catch is quite an accomplishment. Sturgeons are ancient fish that can live for more than 100 years and reach weights of up to 1,500 pounds. They are classified as "critical" on the Threatened and Endangered Species list due to overfishing and habitat loss.

While there is no current season for sturgeon fishing in California, the fisherman who caught this one says that he will definitely be looking to do it again. He plans to have the fish mounted and plans to eat some of it himself. What a guy!
